Welcome to Hiking the Wild

Welcome to “Hiking the Wild.” My site chronicles the adventures of one urban dweller turned occasional mountain man. After turning 40, some people buy a sports car- I bought a backpack!

I am a 44 year old, husband of 18 years, father to a 16 year old daughter, pastor & business man, golf addicted, 49er fan. So what caused this urban dweller to hike and seek the wild? Let me start by saying it’s not rooted in a desire to escape the home-front. In fact, my wife and daughter make up an essential part of my “wild” team. It’s not out of frustration with my golf game; I still enjoy the game immensely and maintain a consistent and respectable 10.4, if you must know. While the 49ers’ recent performance could drive any true fan to madness, it did not cause me to seek solace in the wild.

Instead, after 44 years of life, I realize my greatest memories have been defined by adventures. Soren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher and theologian, once wrote, “To venture causes anxiety, but not to venture is to lose one’s self…. And to venture in the highest is precisely to be conscious of one’s self.” Without adventure we risk losing touch of who we really are; never understanding who we can truly become.

I count myself a most fortunate soul. God has blessed my life with incredible adventures. I’ve been shaped and impacted by the people I’ve met, places I’ve traveled, and challenges I’ve overcome. It’s been a journey of love, friendship, thrills and spills across this world- all outside the proverbial four walls.

So, I’m hiking the wild! I am going to find times to pause outside the normal rythyms of life and seek adventure. I’m going to be more intentional to behold creation in all its glory. I want to see the sunrise from a mountaintop, the ocean crash upon a desolate beach, enjoy the thrill of a newly discovered trail, find a hidden swimming hole, meet new friends, and inspire old ones to journey alongside me. I want to take time to be still, savor life, and wonder in awe at the vastness of God’s creation.

I bring no special wilderness skill to this endevour. The web, friends, and trail-experience will be my teachers. So catch a glimpse of my adventures, both trials and errors, and see that if I can do it- so can you! Join me, join the adventure and start hiking the wild.
